Schematic representation of experimental design. This study evaluated the effects of supplementation of P. acidilactici in diets for Atlantic salmon performance and gut health after transfer from freshwater to seawater. Fish were fed FOS alone (FOS diet) and FOS and GOS in combination with P. acidilactici (FOS–BC and GOS–BC diets respectively) and a commercial diet as a control/reference for 10 weeks. Six different parameters were analyzed using traditional and state-of-art-multi-omics techniques as detailed in the materials and methods section to investigate the effects of supplementing the diet containing the prebiotic FOS with the probiotic P. acidilactici (FOS–BSC vs. FOS) and replacing FOS in the FOS–BC diet with GOS (GOS–BC vs. FOS–BC) on post-smolt Atlantic salmon.
